What is cool this week at K12 Online Conference?

October 19, 2007 · No Comments · k12online 2007, k12online07

The coolest new tool I’ve learned so far from the K12 Online conference is Gabcast, which Liz Kolb highlighted during her presentation on Cellphones as Classroom Learning Tools. Gabcast allows you to record a podcast directly from your cell phone, by calling a 1-800 number (once you have set up an account)!   Talk about convenient!   [...]

It’s about all of us

October 15, 2007 · 3 Comments · k12online 2007, k12online07, Web 2.0

True confessions time–when I was little, I used to play teacher.(also used to play librarian, geologist and nurse!)    Playing teacher involved reading the instructions from a reading test booklet aloud, standing in the front of the bedroom explaining things, calling out spelling words, and the like. Wouldn’t it be incredible if five or ten years [...]

K12 Online–Putting the “pedagogy into the tools”

October 14, 2007 · No Comments · k12online 2007, k12online07, Teacher Learner

Last week, we began our campus inservice by viewing Darren Draper’s “Pay Attention” video, which generated some complex discussions.   Bill Martin, an English teacher at our campus, commented afterwards that he felt it was critical to be thinking about the pedagogy involved in using the tools that Darren challenges us about in the video. Chris Lehmann and Kristin Hokanson have posted [...]

More resources for promoting responsible use of networking

October 9, 2007 · 2 Comments · EthicsChallenge, Tools

In keeping with the conversations (Karl Fisch, Wes Fryer, Doug Johnson, myself, and others) going on around the blogosphere about filtering, access, and social networking in schools, I wanted to share this excellent toolkit from YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) entitled “Teens and Social Networking in School and Public Libraries.” The toolkit has ideas appropriate for librarians [...]

K12 Online Keynote tomorrow

October 7, 2007 · No Comments · k12online 2007, k12online07, Web 2.0

I’m really looking forward tomorrow to David Warlick’s K12 Online Conference keynote, which will be available for viewing on the K12online conference site starting tomorrow morning.  Last year about this time, I stumbled over the information about the conference on someone’s blog, and was blown away when I watched the keynote address.   If you want to take a [...]

Library bloggers

October 7, 2007 · 2 Comments · il2007, ISW2007

InfoToday, who hosts the Internet Librarian conferences, has posted a list of bloggers attending this year’s Internet Librarian West at the end of October; while this is a small conference, it is a powerhouse collection of librarian technologists.     This is a  great list of bloggers to get a preview of what’s going on in libraries and technology today, ranging [...]

What can we do going forward?

October 4, 2007 · 5 Comments · Leadership, Tools, Web 2.0

I’ve been following a number of posts the last couple of weeks about internet filtering and the erratic application of it in schools, and the frustrations of teachers just wanting to share fascinating new ways of learning with their students. Karl Fisch did an excellent job of pulling some of those threads together in [...]

K12 Online conference Update!

October 4, 2007 · No Comments · k12online 2007, k12online07

The K12 Online Conference starts Monday with David Warlick’s keynote address, which will be posted Monday morning(USA time) on the conference website.  Sylvia Martinez has a great post explaining the conference, if you would like to know more.   She compares it to “comfy slipper learning” because you can learn whenever it’s convenient for you. The [...]

The impact of libraries

October 3, 2007 · No Comments · libraries

A team from my campus just returned from visiting two respected Illinois schools, New Trier, and Adlai Stevenson.  One comment I’ve heard from those attending the site visit is how large the library staffs were at both campuses(one campus had 8 librarians and at least 4 assistants, and one had 6 librarians) ;  in fact, one [...]

The disconnect

October 1, 2007 · 5 Comments · Innovation, Web 2.0

A lot of posts among some of my online “acquaintances,” not to mention some issues at my own campus, have gotten me thinking about the disconnect between “the possible” and what’s permitted in schools. What particularly set me off today was a twitter post from a respected colleague who was gradually having all web 2.0 [...]
