I am not an educator but really a failed student of a school system that tried back in the 50s to convert me to a procedural learner, I still would rather "play" and experiment with an idea or tool to learn how to use it than read the manuals or such. I think your ideas need to get out to the non teachers so we can know that teachers really want to teach and not just test. At 67 I have lost almost all grammatical rules.

Carloyn,

Thanks for extending the conversation, and your comments at both Wes' and my blogs. I would hesitate to say that you failed your teachers... Especially in the light of your entire post. We really are at the heart of a number of issues with education today. We are taking the time to look at education overall from outside the classroom aspect which is where I fell that some educators are struggling. They are so in the moment that they are not aware of the fragmented detached learning they are imposing on students in the vague name of curriculum.

Again we both get back to where do we get the straw to break the camels back so that new professional development can start occurring and we can move the systems away from high stakes testing to authentic learning and formative assessment for learning so our students can begin achieving...

I want to throw another blog post at you. I am just finishing one on RSS Readers. Skip the top part if you want and move to the section "On to educational uses" http://vanishingpoint.edublogs.org/2008/03/29/in-the-cloud-expanded-part-ii-rss-aggregators/

Hope this might help to open some educators minds.

Excellent. I haven't been able to articulate why I find some assignments inappropriate but you've said it well. I'm diigoing this and sharing it with my teachers. Thanks...
