Wikis and more wikis

I know some of you have tried pbwiki.com or other wiki sites like Wikispaces, to start creating a wiki for yourself or for students to use.

This article in Sunday’s American Statesman, (via the Boston Globe), shows wikis going more “mainstream” as technology tools and has examples of some new ones being developed.

If you haven’t used or tried a wiki, think of the site wikipedia, which anyone can edit.  You can create them for your classroom as a knowledge building site for a project or unit, or use them as your own website, too.  Sites like jotspot.com and wikispaces have many extra templates and features to help you with that, while pbwiki is very useful is for building a knowledge base or reference page.

Wiki means “quick” in Hawaiian, and all these tools are definitely quick to use!

  1. I posted more info on wikis vs blogs on our Project Technology site. Be sure to attend Wednesday’s PT this week before or afterschool. Carolyn will show you how easy it is to set them up and getting them going!

If you aren’t sure what a wiki is or how its different from a blog, visit the Whs Project Technology blog – http://whsprojecttech.edublogs.org.

  2. Page Flakes?

I just checked out this site – http://www.pageflakes.com. Its a site where a user defines their own homepage. You set what you want on it and add “flakes” to it by adding more content. My first page I put my weather, time, and some flickr photos. It also posts YouTube videos and other content. It automatically pulls the data to your home site.

Once you have setup the page, you can then share it with the world.

Google does this with Googlepages. More and more sites are heading this way…..why SchoolCenter?
