Locking the library?

This(Lock the Library! Rowdy Students Are Taking Over) doesn’t seem  right.  I don’t want to judge the situation not being there, (and being a librarian, I know there may be more to this situation than meets the eye), but it does seem like students should be able to use the local library after school.   This seems very counter to efforts to attract students to reading and to changing stereotypes of libraries.

I generally think it’s a good thing that students’ perception of their welcome at libraries is changing, causing them to want to flock there, but I also tend to agree that some students don’t seem to know how to act in public places….including libraries and bookstores.  Anyone who has been to our local bookstores during finals is aware of that I’m sure.

After reading design discussions on Think Lab and thinking about library design for our renovation, I wonder what library design ideas could be used to create more spaces for varying uses of libraries by teens?

Thoughts or comments?  How can we help students understand the use of public spaces? Do you think this library should have made some different choices?
